On the bus ride from the Long Beach Airport - I literally had NO idea where I wanted to go.. I was flying blind so to speak.
And afer a long ride, it turned a corner.. and I saw a sign:
ROSCOE'S CHICKEN AND WAFFLES
A fabled LA institution. Yes. That was gonna be my first stop. *drool*
Just because I dont know what Im looking for, doesnt mean I dont know it when I see it. :)

Spring Break in LA
Cheap flights are good. $39 to LA from Oakland on JetBlue (advance purchase required).
Greyhound money, and greyhound doesnt have live TV in the headsets. Fast, comfy. I should do this more often.
Pity JetBlue doesnt fly to Hawai'i...

The passengers getting off in New York, for instance, largely adopt a world-weary, impatient, look-at-their-watches-a-lot, been there, done this all the time attitude.
Miami, its a loaded down with everything, high-energy, get going attitude.
Jacksonville, slow-relaxed, low anxiety attitude, as most passengers had other planes to catch, long drives to go to get to where they are going.
Chicagoans shrug their shoulders, straigh ahead, serious look, things to do attitude.
My first flight into LA.. it was STRIKING the set most folk adopted.. a self-conscious, hair-styled, everybody-is-looking-at-me attitude.
An hour before flying outta frisco - they were way more relaxed. Wow.

I'd under-estimated how long it would take to get from downtown LA to Long Beach Airport, and got there as my flight home was taking off.
This is why I never book the last flight outta town if I can help it.
I was expecting the grief airlines usually give me. Nope, not JetBlue. They instantly gave me a standby ticket, and made sure I had a seat to get home.
I got treated the way I expect to be treated.
Combine the reasonable prices -- I'll be flying them again.
Plus, I like having TeeVee to watch on the flight.

Didnt have much time while in LA, but made the time to hang with the Yam Fam.
Dinner with the Yams was great. Hawaiian, filling.. and good. I even got to try spam musubi for the first time.
Was good. :)

And then made sure I ate well.

Im home.
Got into town, dropped off my bags, went straight to work without even changing or sleeping. Just woke up.
Coming out of the 16th & Mission BART station, lugging my bags, I heard applause and music. There were a bunch of young musicians having a classical music jam session. Not for money, not for fame, just because.
So Bay Area.
Made me smile.
Its not home, but nice to come back to.

Whoo.
I didnt know it when I booked the flights, but I need to get outta town - even if its only for a few days.
Today's horrorscope sez exactly whats been going on:
Too long to explain, but I had to make a decision I took no joy in - but there is a certain element of ... satisfaction.
Sometimes ya gotta be the bad guy. I had to do it, and it was done to me yesterday.
Im fine with events either way. Has to be done.
But the flip side in being the bad guy - is dealing with the whirlwind ya just reaped.
Which is why Im glad to be packing to go outta town.
I'll deal with it when I get back.

Since its only a few days, Im packing my old ratty backpack.
It wasnt ratty when I got it in March of 2002 - but, whoo boy, Ive lived out of, lived on, carried, slept on, sat on this bag.
Been with me almost every day since then.
It is most definitely worse for wear. But still functional.
The guy who gave it to me, gave it to me to send me on my way on Great Adventure as he called it.
I still havent written him back to tell him about what Ive been through - but he was prescient.
Heh. He's getting a novel from me.
No way Im throwing this backpack away.

JPennant: so, I got up and told her she could use it

Wakey, wakey
I jumped into bed and went unconscious after doing my graveyard shift.
After a few hours into my sleep the phone rang. Eventually, I assured some lady with a heavy cantonese accent that this number, however correct - was not a flower shop.
As I hung up, getting ready to drift back to unconsciousness, a heavy motor blasted to life underneath my window.
Oof.
I tried to fight through the decibels, dogpaddling to slumberland, and then the fone rung again. *sigh* Another wrong number. I hung up but realized that the heavy unmuffled motor of the San Francisco Department of Public Works cleaning truck was not about to shut off any time soon.
There was not gonna be any sleep to be had.
HOkay. The gods wanted me awake right then.
I dont question the signs anymore, I just go along with them.
The crew soon finished and I diddled around on the computer, checking mail, updating forums, wondering why she hadnt written me yet.
Because she called me as soon as I finished the thought.
Thats why I needed to be up.

This place is like that.
Im watching the morning News and Da Mayor is sucking on a Venti Starbux and yukking it up with the stattion's political reporter.
The dude is cool. Ive actually met him, usually around the Civic Center or the Tenderloin on his walkarounds.
Lets hope he follows the example of the Chicago Daley family, who are content to be the Big Cheese in their hometown, instead of seeking to be Prez.
Thas just crazy.

Now, since there isnt a 'fleabaghotel.com' - anyone have a favorite grungy hotel/motel in the West Hollywood/Hollywood/Downtown LA area I can crash at for less than 50 bux a night? 35 bux is my preferred rate.

If you do book a vacation, there is a possibility you will almost immediately regret it, so take your time and don't rush into anything you are not 100 per cent sure of.

Must be the full moon. Feeling kinda dunno, melancholy a bit.

JPennant: He had collapsed face down in the hallway

JPennant: he was overweight and sedentary
JPennant: nice guy tho
JPennant: it just made me stop, but prolly not for the reasons I thought I would
JPennant: in brief, it brought to mind that song "Suicide is Painless"

JPennant: When I obsess about dying, I worry about how painful it'll be
JPennant: It didnt look that painful.

North Beach
"I'll get the Chicken Parmigiana but with risotto."
"But we have Pasta. It comes with pasta."

Heh, I think he's used to telling people what they should have.
Me, I prefer rice over pasta.
It was VERY good.

I started taking pictures, and naturally, people started pulling up to look at the car.
(Whats UP with that, by the way?? I start taking pictures and people pull up to enjoy the view.. and be IN the view. Goodness.)
The owner was doing the usual Italian Restaurant Thing In a Touristy Area, calling and waving to people to come on in.
While across the street, he was indicating to a bunch of people to come on in. I had intended to have Dim Sum down the road (Dim Sum! All you can eat!! Five dollars!!), but you know - I decided to check it out.
Not expensive, pretty good.
As I walked out, the owner firmly shook my hand and in heavily accented english, looked me in the eye and said he hoped Id be back.
You know, that might be his schtick - but that goes a long way with me.

SF Public Library
The top floor of the main SFPL (San Francisco Public Library). The glass roof of the central lobby is shaped like a nautilus shell.
Its probably one of the few places in SF where people of all kinds congregate, making it a great hook-up joint. :)
It's a great library and a beautiful building.
