Today's horrorscope:
Purpose and drive are simply pouring out of you, so if there's something that you've been wanting to make progress on, now is the time. You're able to convince others of the rightness of your actions quite easily, so it's also an opportune moment to gather allies for any efforts you might need to make. Remember that what you're working on takes considerable amounts of energy, so make sure you pace yourself accordingly.

Ingrid Bergman (Swedish born American film and stage Actress, 1915-1982)

----------
Those born on August 29th have a strong desire to live their life in peace and harmony. Their emotions can be injured very easily. They sometimes can be their "own worst enemy". They have a vivid imagination and function the best in a well organized atmosphere. They believe in telling you the way it is and can do it without hurting your feelings.
----------
TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (August 29). Every little thing you do is magic! At least the rest of the world sees it this way, though your tendency to be hard on yourself obscures your own vision! Lighten up and laugh a lot -- fall brings juicy projects and love galore. Domestic talents give a cozy feeling to the winter. Family mills around your abode. Love is delicious with Libra or Scorpio.
IF TODAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY
There will be opportunities left, right and center this year - you may in fact find you have too many choices! Therefore, your first priority must be to sit yourself down somewhere quiet, list your priorities and form a plan of action that will take you from where you are now to where you want to be this time next year. What could be easier?
IF AUGUST 29 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Important changes of view are in the works this year, so be poised to accept whatever is thrown in your path. It's out with the old and in with the new, so settling down into a comfortable groove may be difficult in the month ahead or in January. Stable relationships will withstand changes, but if you and a partner grow apart maybe it is for the best. Important friendships may open up some lucrative doors for you in late January - and you will be able to develop new routines as life settles into more predictable patterns during the months

You Know You're From Chicago If...By James Manning
- You - correctly - don't pronounce the "s" at the
end of Illinois.
It's pronounced "Ill-uh-Noy".
- You become irate at people who do.
Oh yes. Very much so. You wanna either correct them, or bash 'em in the head. Very irritating, that. They know better.
- You measure distance in minutes.
This is quite true. Never thought about that.
- You have no problem spelling or pronouncing "Des Plaines".
Yeah. Like it looks. Not "Deh plahn", but "Des
Plains". Duh. :)
- Your school classes were canceled because of excessive cold.
Never happened. Not in Evanston. Even at Minus 34 with a windchill of
minus 85.
- Your school classes were canceled because of excessive heat.
Never happened. The heat usually comes after the school term ends.
- You've even had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.
True. Have seen it go from 85 to 45 degrees in an hour.
- Stores don't have sacks, they have bags
And? We also call soda "pop" or "soda pop".
.
- You see a car running in the parking lot at the
store with no one in it no matter what time of the
year.
This is true. But specially when its cold.
- You end your sentences with an unnecessary
preposition. Example: "Where's my coat at?" or "If
you go to the mall I wanna go with."
I do talk like that still.
- You can locate Illinois on the United States map.
I can find it even on a satellite map: Lower left hand
side of Lake Michigan out west to the Mississippi
river going all the way down south to where the
Mississippi and Ohio Rivers meet. Thats Illinois.
- Your idea of a really great tenderloin is when the
meat is at least twice as big as the bun and
accompanied only by ketchup and a dill pickle slice.
DEFINITELY. Hold the pickle. Add grilled onions.
- You install security lights on your house and
garage and then leave both unlocked.
Umm, in the burbs, yeah.
- When asked how your trip was to any foreign,
exotic place, you say, "It was different."
Hahaha. True. :)
- You carry jumper cables in your car.
YES YES YES. You'd better.
Every car Ive had in Illinois, I replaced BOTH the alternator and batteries at least once.
- You know what the numbers I-80, 55, and 90 mean.
I-80 is the main route going East/West between Cali
and New York, I-55 is the North/South Route, I-90
will take you between Seattle and Boston, being merged
with I-80 between Chicago and Ohio.
- You realize that I-290, I-90, I-94, and I-294 are
all different roads.
Yes. Although it doesnt seem that way coming thru
Chicago and the northern suburbs.
- You know the given names of the interstates, i.e.:
Stevenson, Kennedy, Eisenhower, Dan Ryan.
Yup, dont forget the Edens Expressway.
- You refer to anything south of I-80 as "Southern Illinois".
Ehhhh, anything south of Joliet, really.
- You refer to Lake Michigan as "The Lake".
Yup.
- No matter where you are, when you hear the term
"Downtown" you immediately assume they are talking
about Downtown Chicago.
Mmm, sometimes. Most people say 'Downtown Chicago'.
- You find yourself referring to the central
business district of any city you happen to be in as "The
Loop."
Nah. Who does that? "The Loop"is "downtown Chicago". Nowhere else.
- You have two favorite football teams: The Bears
and anyone who beats the Green Bay Packers.
Damned skippy.
Although, my alternate favorite team were the Raiders, til they moved to LA. And because I was in Jacksonville when they were started, I became a Jaguars fan. (I like saying "Jahg-Wire" like a true Jacksonvillian.)
But all that goes out the window when theyre playing the Bears.
- A brawl over which Chicago baseball team is better
breaks out every year at your neighborhood block party
Fuck yeah. Da Sox and Da Cubbies arent the same
team, dammit.
- Even though you live 3 hours south, you still buy
"The Trib."
True. Even tho I prefer the Sun-Times.
- You know what goes on a Chicago Style Hot Dog.
Tomatoes, pickles, chopped onions and .. ahh, celery
salt. :)
- You know what Chicago Style Pizza is -- and feel
pity for those that don't, and with good reason!
But of course. Nothing compares.
By the way, what Dominos call 'Deep Dish'.. isnt.
- You know why they call Chicago "the Windy City".
Yes, not because of the wind, but because of the
politicians.
- You understand what "lake-effect" means.
Oh yeah, thats weather caused by the lake. Snow and rain that occurs because of the proximity
to the Lake. I once lived at a point (corner of Washington and Dodge in Evanston) where it would be
snowing, go one block away from the lake and it would be raining.
- You know the difference between Amtrak and Metra,
and know which station they end up at.
Yeah, Metra is the commuter train with local
stations, Amtrak is interstate, and neither do the two meet,
except in downtown Chicago.
- You have ridden an "L" (elevated train).
Well, Duh. :) And you say and write it "El" not "L". Sheesh. (The letter L means The Loop.)

Ahh, fall.
It feels like fall in San Francisco.
Bright skies, crisp air. Mornings in the 40's and 50's.
That bracing wind reminds of the coming winter, the changing seasons, makes you glad to be a alive.
Yep, nuthing like fall.
Unless its fall in &%#%^&%%^& AUGUST!!!
Damned San Francisco weather. I feel like my summer has been stolen.

It's only been 2 weeks. Ive got this schedule through December.
Ah, I knew what I was getting into. Just dont have to like it.

Mac attack
After another system crash (because Im cramming a lot of stuff on a 30gb drive on a 4 year old machine).
JPennant: gotta replace the drive soon
McClint: which drive?
JPennant: hard drive in the iMac
McClint: you might just have to look toward investing in a new (or semi-new) mac
JPennant: I am, im keeping an eye out for a G4 iMac
JPennant: If I get a g4 desktop, Im gonna have to get a flat screen
JPennant: cheaper than getting a g4 imac, I guess
McClint: yeah could be
JPennant: (dont want a big machine)
JPennant: small space, japanese style, yanno? :-)
McClint: hehehe then a Mac Mini might be in your future
JPennant: doesnt excite me
JPennant: neither does a G5 iMac
JPennant: To me, there is something off about the G5 imac
JPennant: the mini mac too
JPennant: design wise that is
McClint: but they are perfect for your Japanese style living
JPennant: yeah, I know - but theyre not pretty enough
McClint: well if you get a G4, it'll just sit under your desk where you cant see it anyway :-)
JPennant: I had a client, big time photographer. He wouldnt allow me to put ANY piece of equipment in his studio that wasnt stylish.
JPennant: I was like "Dude, c'mon - you just need equipment that works", but he was adamant about that
McClint: heheheh
JPennant: He had models as staff and assistants, to show how serious he was about that :-)
JPennant: But now.. Im understanding his mentality.
JPennant: Hey, have you ever had your Powerbook crash?
Glinessa: yep...once
Glinessa: and only once
JPennant: heh.
JPennant: Just reading the new Apple Switch campaign...
Glinessa: ok?
JPennant: http://www.apple.com/switch/

JPennant: As a tech, I gotta laugh :-)
JPennant: It crashes less than Windows, yes
JPennant: but never crashes? Ha. :-)
Glinessa: yeah...that's definitely not true
Glinessa: all computers crash
JPennant: yup
Glinessa: that's just wrong...lol
JPennant: They had gotten away from saying "It just works" over th last coupla years, but now theyre back on it :-)
Glinessa: lol
Glinessa: i believe in being simple and it just works works for me
JPennant: yup
JPennant: I cant wait for when I can run both windows and mac on the same machine.
Glinessa: hahaha...that is coming soon right?
JPennant: next year and two.
Glinessa: ok
JPennant: until then..

Chasing summer
The other day, the morning low at sunrise was FORTY-SIX degrees in SF.
Actually colder than Anchorage, Alaska.
I woke up shivering and a hot shower barely warmed me.
Im tired of this.
McClint: ya know, you really are missing this fun Florida heat and humidity we've been suffering through for the past couple weeks
JPennant: I know :-(
JPennant: Youre being sarcastic, Im not
JPennant: Its fucking cold here
McClint: heat index over 100° here
JPennant: I left Chicago partly because I got tired of overcast days in winter
JPennant: Im gonna have to leave here in the summer
McClint: i can't walk from my front door to my car (20 feet) without being drenched in sweat
JPennant: its good for you. Makes the skin soft :-)
McClint: yeah, it's called "melting"
JPennant: jawhol :-)
JPennant: Ironically, I'll be going to Hawaii during SF's week of summer
JPennant: Its the only time of year that the temps in SF reach over 90, October is
McClint: hehe you'll get real sun
Not just sun, I want my core temp to be raised!

She used to be a model.
When she is cleaned up, as gaunt as she is - she stops traffic.
Living in San Francisco, ive met former scientists, stockbrokers, actors, activists, professors, nurses, police officers, musicians, lawyers, business people, social workers, too many doctorate holders to count, and .. models.
This is not the place to be if youre trying to stop an addiction.

Another brick in the wall
JPennant: Heh, mars.. school is cool
mars: i'm glad you're enjoying it
JPennant: glad Im back for a brief period
mars: not so good to be back for years
mars: haha
mars: so learn anything new lately?
JPennant: Just filling in the gaps
JPennant: I think college is largely wasted on the youth in this sense
JPennant: They often use it to find themselves.
JPennant: 20 years hence, I dont have to do that -- Im just there fill in the gaps and raise my game.
JPennant: Plus, I already wanna sleep with one of my teachers :-)
JPennant: Such a bonus :-)
mars: lol
mars: yes, college can be wasted on the youth
JPennant: I think Im now more aware of time and appreciate how high the stakes are this time around
JPennant: If Id have it to do my initial college experience again .. i woulda busted my butt to get my degree in the shortest period of time the last time.
mars: so how much is school costing you?
mars: or do you get financial aid?
JPennant: everything is to be paid for
JPennant: but in case it isnt, Im paying for it.
mars: cool
JPennant: its 26 bux per credit
JPennant: and CCSF is actually one HELL of a school.
mars: wow that's awesome
JPennant: it isd :-)
JPennant: But, Im not making that an excuse to go to school forever. Im trying get as much as I can in as short a period I can
mars: i would too
mars: what classes are you taking?
JPennant: This semester .. I waived the computer proficiency classes
JPennant: so, Ive enrolled in Print production and page layout classes
mars: how'd you waive it? take some test?
JPennant: yup
mars: what a funny requirement
JPennant: basically, you take the final test
mars: which consists of what?
JPennant: well, CNIT100 is PC basics.. and Grph 25 is computer basics using a Mac
JPennant: I can teach these classes, so Im not about to waste my time when I could be taking other things and getting things over with sooner.
mars: hehe maybe you should teach those classes hehehe
JPennant: Instead, Im taking prepress classes as my electives.
JPennant: as well, as some photo lighting courses.
mars: ooh sounds interesting
JPennant: heh, just filling in the gaps :-)
JPennant: Id rather learn everything on my own, but sometimes ya gotta go to school to learn the basics.
JPennant: Heh, one aspect of it reminds me I am in the future
JPennant: Back in the day, Id have floppy or zip disks to save my work
JPennant: now one thing the college is telling me I need to get
JPennant: is a flash drive :-)
mars: oh..you don't have a flash drive?
mars: i woulda thought you did
JPennant: Well, not a flash drive proper (didnt wanna spend the cash)
JPennant: but I have an ipod, several memory cards, and even a 2.5 inch USB external drive :-)
mars: true
JPennant: Feels like the Jetsons. :)
mars: =)

Song I keep playing over and over on the iPod:
Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians- What I Am
It's a song Ive heard over and over on the radio, but I hadnt heard it up close.
Such a difference, hearing the jazz guitar allied with a wah-wah pedal, tight drumming, the quirky phrasing of Edie's vocals, and the lyrics..
Man, the lyrics..
Philosophy
Is a walk on slippery rocks
Religion
Is a light in the fog
I might just go buy that CD.

This past week's horrorscope:
Ancient lore sez to not to make permanent decisions and sign contracts during periods of Merc retro, which ended a few days ago.
During that time, I had the brilliant idea of gong to LA and Vegas for my birthday.
Good thing I listened to my instincts and didnt pull the trigger on buying tickets to go anywhere.
Long story short, Merc retrograde passed, I came to my senses, and realized going ANYWHERE on my birthday would be unrealistic.
Cuz the cash isnt really there.
Shit.
Ah , I'll make it up to myself.

Virgo, don't you love it when reality smacks you upside the head? Nope, we guess you don't. Who does?
Still, you're not going to let your fear of that stinging slap dominate you, right? You're not going to make plans that accommodate that fear, right? Hell, no!
