Chess Club Barbie

JPennant: Oh yeah, I wanted to ask your opinion
JPennant: you play chess?
julez: used to a little
JPennant: SOmeone suggested I start a little chess club for women
julez: hehe, i read your blog
julez: local chess club or online?
JPennant: It seems many many women want to play chess but are intimidated to play regularly
JPennant: dunno yet. right now itsa "pie in the sky, might be innaresting" dealie deal

JPennant: Curiously I also noted women weigh the importance of the different pieces differently than men
julez: Queen is most important of course ;-)
julez: kekeke
JPennant: See? EXACTLY. Thats what THEY said.
JPennant: they seemed to have a little confusion on the difference between "most important" and "most powerful"
JPennant: to women trying to understand the game, they seemed to be one and the same
julez: what do you think is most powerful?
JPennant: To the women I talked to .. the Queen is the most important because its the most powerful
JPennant: Men consider the King as the most important because if the king dies, the game ends. Duh.
julez: hmm, both are true
JPennant: Male players make the distinction
julez: oh, hehehehe
julez: that's funny :-)
JPennant: I wonder why women look at it that way?
julez: i wonder why men have to separate the two? ;-)
JPennant: The King is ALSO powerful
JPennant: but its restricted
julez: nod
JPennant: the Queen is definitely the most powerful, all agree
JPennant: but for men, its not the most important
julez: semantics shmantics
JPennant: The women seemed truly puzzled as to why men make the distinction
JPennant: again, Im drawing conclusions from an empirical group of 3 :-)
JPennant: interestingly enough, these were women in their 50's.
julez: nod
JPennant: they all wished they could play chess on a high level
JPennant: or at all
julez: all i know is that the bishop moves this way, the knights move this way, the queen gets to go every which way, and the king gets *one* step each turn
JPennant: right
julez: and you gotta protect the king at all cost
JPennant: zactly
julez: even if the queen dies
JPennant: zactly
julez: right
julez: hehehe

julez: i don't think most women feel comfortable about competition
JPennant: they play shoot em up games too :-)
julez: that's why women's sports are growing so slowly
JPennant: Its the women who suggested a Chess CLub for women
julez: yeah, because they want to expand their horizons
julez: and chess is exclusive
JPennant: It is?
julez: has an exclusive feel to it
JPennant: How so?
julez: only smarty pants play it
julez: unlike checkers
JPennant: I know many many doofii who play Chess ;-)
julez: yeah well ;-)

julez: of course, the most complicated game for me is this chinese game my dad plays with little black and white pieces. i never could figure out the rules
JPennant: oh yah

JPennant: Heheh... I think this Wimmens Chess Club should serve Wine and cheez ;-)
julez: you have to make everybody swish the wine around in the goblets and sniff the aroma ;-)
JPennant: *kekeke*
julez: LOL!!! *snort*
JPennant: heee

julez: but i think everybody would like nachos and beer
JPennant: nah, not in Cali-four-nigh-A???
julez: if you had some microbrew, or even Sam Adams or Pete's Wicked, and multicolor tortilla chips, hell yeah :-)
JPennant: Or maybe wine and cheez crap is a NorCali thing
JPennant: heehee
julez: down here in SoCali people are just as likely to serve Corona
JPennant: No wine?
julez: hmm, let's see, in the last few years the only times i've had wine at a social event were weddings
JPennant: Not here
JPennant: every blasted party and social gathering has wine. Its a rule or sumthin.
julez: hehe you should write about that
JPennant: hm.

JPennant: I think it would be a waste of time
julez: ?
JPennant: a womens chess club
julez: why?
julez: as a business venture i think you're right but if you wanted to meet women... :-)
julez: hehehe
JPennant: heh, nah I wouldnt have to try that hard.. Berkeley is wimmens rich as it is..
JPennant: unless women saw it as a popular thing to do.. they wont do it
JPennant: there's not enough female iconoclasts out there to do their own thing
julez: nod
JPennant: as I said, it was OLDER women who were interested in this
JPennant: theyve been through the popularity wars ;-)
julez: maybe if the teeny bopper stores started selling hot pink and neon green chess sets in mohair carrying cases...
julez: i'd buy that ;-)
JPennant: LoL
julez: actually character chess sets are really popular, like simpsons chess sets
julez: oooooooooh, a Barbie chess set!!!!!!!!!!!!!
julez: or the pieces could be covered in animal print felt
JPennant: *shakes head*
julez: zebra over here and giraffe over there
julez: that would rock!
JPennant: Lord. chess as an accessory huh? :-P
julez: hey, no different from those grand old marble/glass sets fogeys like to buy :-)
JPennant: That is sooooooooooooooooooo different :-P
julez: is not! kekekekekekeke :-)
JPennant: *harrumph*
JPennant: Barbie chess.. woman please.
julez: with skipper as the bishop and kelly as the pawns
julez: oh my lord, a whole row of little kellys
JPennant: kelly?
julez: yeah, she's even smaller than Skipper
julez: like a 4 year old
JPennant: what????
JPennant: Gilligan's Island?
JPennant: <-- clooless
julez: They're both Barbie's little nieces/little sister
JPennant: ohhh
JPennant: ninja warrior barbies?
julez: empress of china barbie :-)
JPennant: hey now
julez: it exists! i've seen it, she even looks chinese!

JPennant: yeah, a chess thing would never work :-P
JPennant: If I wanna find female chess players, I gotta go find some super-hot brainy eastern european model types
julez: LOL!
JPennant: Unless theyre studying at Cal Berkeley, aint gonna find em round here
julez: i've heard Eastern European women are really put together
julez: heard it from one of my profs who went to teach there one summer
julez: 3 inch stilettos on cobblestone, and they don't even wobble
JPennant: theyre crawling all over ny
julez: yeah? what are you doing on the west coast then? ;-)
JPennant: Umm, for the California chicas?
julez: a reason for every season, teehee
JPennant: A lotta free love mulatto babes?
julez: LOL!!!!!

JPennant: *pshhh* chess club barbie :-P
julez: you just watch, it's gonna be huge!
JPennant: puhleeze
JPennant: :-)
