Time to Fly

Time to Fly, originally uploaded by Itinerant.

Sometimes I think

... that i should be pushing harder than I am, implementing things. But my instinct (and hopefully, not my laziness) is having me hang back.

So today's horrorscope sez:
Your pace is perfect right now -- every step you take is in the right rhythm, and you're dancing through life (even if it doesn't quite feel like it). That's the biggest reason why you need to resist any growing temptation to speed things up. Things are happening the way they should be -- and you should respect that. Pushing harder isn't wise. Even just planning ahead or doing some advance research is going to prove to be a waste of time.

I'll be travelling and stuff soon enough.

Now, i think i'll go catch a movie.

SF Pride 2006

SF Pride 2006, originally uploaded by Itinerant.

While in the shower, i did some good thinking (i need to get a waterproof pen and paper to jot shit down while in the shower) and then I started singing the refrain from Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party"...

But it's all right now,
I learned my lesson well

You see,
you can't please everyone,
so you got to please yourself

-------
What am i reading now? Brit photography magazines mostly. Got a big pile of them, in fact. Brits tend to be keen photographers, and being the down-earth types, there is a ton of useful info in them, as opposed to the American mags, which tend to tell you what you need to buy and the french, which are all about the pictures themselves.

Unfortunately, that pile of mags Ive accumulated over the past year is distressing me, as I swore Id never accumulate a lot of books again, as books are heavy and are hard to carry around.

The best of them Ive found so far are

- Practical Photography
- Photography Monthly
- Digital Photographer
- Digital Camera World

Great magazines, expensive in the US (13 bux apiece), increasingly easy to find, except for the UK Digital Photographer. The major chains dont stock it and they are quickly sold at the few places where they do sell it. I actually had to beg for months before my newsstand started stocking them. They didnt believe me on the poplularity of the mags, but now they see them flying off the racks. Heh.

Ive always had a dream of running/owning a discriminating newstand/coffee shop/liquor store at a major commuter spot, sorta like Farley's in Potero Hill.

Random thoughts

Im on a
diet of sorts, eliminating and cutting back on some favorite foods. Not to lose weight, but to lower my cholestorol and blood sugars - so no cheese and cut back on starches.

Cheese wasnt so hard. Starch, very much so. I love breads. Potatos. And rice. GIVE UP RICE???

I dont wanna give up rice.

So more protein, less starch. The good news? I feel lighter on my feet already. The bad news? I feel hungry constantly. Even shortly after a big meal. This is when I realized that I depended on starches to make me feel full and sated for a long time. After a protein rich meal, the low grade hungry feeling comes back quicker.

I appreciate the benefits, i hate the feeling.

With this comes another realization - my sense of direction comes from food!

When I cut back on starches, a lot of my favorite places to eat were suddenly eliminated, giving me no good reason to wander in that direction.

I find that interesting.
-----------
"Are you a photographer?"

I still dont answer that question well. I hum, haw, equivocate.

"I take pictures", i say.

Oddly, the questions have become more intense now.

"Are you a professional?"

I still equivocate.

One of the essential components of one's identity is a cover story, a legend, the short bio that establishes who you are. Like a pocket full of ID's, it establishes or denies entry to people and places.

As any con man or king will tell you - a good cover story or legend is gold.

So, why am I equivocating?

I dont earn money at photography. I feel my work is only now coming up to a consistent pro level. I dont have pro level gear yet. Heh, no business cards. :)

But what it comes down to is a feeling that I am lacking somehow.

Aright. These things must be addressed.

A good cover story is too valuable to eff with.

Sticky bun and decaf, the aftermath
