Foggy in Frisco

Foggy in Frisco, originally uploaded by Itinerant.

Today's horrorscope:
VIRGO

You don't have to be cautious. You don't have to be fearful. There may, in your own mind at least, be good reasons to keep your head down but the planets indicate that you have precious little to be genuinely worried about. You can stay at home and lock the doors if you wish this weekend but there is really no need. Live life, don't fear it.

Well, aright then. :)

Ok, Im gonna go over by the ocean now.

Dont fear the fog. Dont fear the fog. Dont fear the fog.

Long story short

Sometimes
when I get home from work, I'll fall into a dead sleep.

The dreams tend to be long and illuminative.

Todays dreams I was working again as a private consultant to wealthy clients, as a one-off favor. Long story short - I got an offers for other work. Tempting offers.

Work that I havent done in years, and refuse to do now.

In the process of the dream, there was someone in my life. Someone from the past who seems to be an avatar, a representative of who I consider I should be with when in a relationship.

Someone who has been long out of my life, seperated by a whole country.

I woke up realizing I was still holding on to things that are holding me back.

I bounced the story off an old friend:

JPennant: Anyway, thats that
Rashid: i'd never have guessed it.
JPennant: Yeah.
JPennant: But i need to release her, and my self identity as a computer geek.
JPennant: Those two things are holding me back.
Rashid: release is a tough thing for Earth signs, I hear.
JPennant: We hold onto things for awhile

Yes we do.

A Big Breakfast

A Big Breakfast, originally uploaded by Itinerant.

Sure Im only eating one meal a day, but man.. I dont think this is doing me any good.

Ok. I'll cut back to once a week.

"Miss Arlene". A very jamaican name and term. My favorite Jamaican personalized plate is Illinois plate "IRIE DAHTA".

Always nice to see another yardie.

On the west coast, unlike on the East - Jamaicans and other West Indians arent very visible. They blend. Cept for the visible rastafarians, and most of THOSE are americans looking for an identity other than their own.

I do like catching them in the lie...

Its EZ.

"Youre from Jamaica, really?"
"Yeah mon."
"Where are you from?"
"Ocho Rios."
(Always a popular answer, as its a top tourist destination. They never say "Kingston", the ez answer, for some reason.)
"Oh yeah? What parish is Ocho Rios in?"
"Uhhhhhh.."

For a jamaican, that isnt a hard question.

This marks a milestone.

This is the first meal I ever ate using only chopsticks.

If I dont think about it, it works. If I think about how to use the chopsticks, stuff gets tossed everywhere but my mouth.

Still, it felt like I was playing with my food. :)

Yup. Its still mercury retrograde.

Things are still a little fuzzy. Merc retrograde is a time when changes are kinda forced upon you.

Today's horrorscope:

You will be thinking deeply about your life and the direction it seems to be taking However, as Mercury is still moving retrograde you would be wise not to make changes - at least not yet.
A lot can happen between now and the end of the week.
Im just going with the flow.

Gone fishing

JPennant: Im gonna try me some sushi today
misterB: first time?
JPennant: no, but Ive never gone to a sushi place by myself
misterB: ohh, ok
JPennant: the only sushi ive eaten regularly are supermarket rolls, mostly from trader Joe's
misterB: cool. gotta talk to the chef
misterB: that's part of the experience
JPennant: Well, Im gonna do it as cheap as I can at first
misterB: that's how you get the best service too
misterB: but yeah, I know what you mean about cost
misterB: if you get on the chef's good side, they will do a little extra for ya
misterB: the good ones will throw in lotsa extras
JPennant: I dont like spending over 20 bux for myself when eating out
misterB: nah, you don't hafta spend that much
JPennant: When i went out with J, she would treat me to Japanese food. She loves japanese food.
JPennant: I could barely hide my "So, whats so special about this?"
JPennant: one of the reasons we broke up :-)
misterB: heh
JPennant: My point is .. Im trying to figure out the appeal of sushi
misterB: like any kind of food, there's good and bad
JPennant: which means I have to appreciate the sublime
JPennant: Ive got 3 sushi places within a block of me
misterB: sometimes
JPennant: See, for me.. Sushi is not a 'filling' food
misterB: well, no it's not meant to be
JPennant: Im basically popping appetizers
misterB: ahh, buts that's not how to approach it either
JPennant: So, I gotta get past that, eh :-)
misterB: yup
JPennant: The subtlety is largely lost on me
misterB: its a different way of eating... not a lot unlike dim sum
JPennant: J took me to dim sum one time too.
misterB: but that is filling
misterB: and, there is good and bad dim sum
JPennant: I didnt understand dim sum either.
misterB: and also its more than just the food
misterB: dim sum is not really meant for just 2 ppl
JPennant: I think my preference is for food that can be both filling and sublime :-)
misterB: she probably didn't understand food ;-)
JPennant: No, she does. She just couldnt articulate it in a way we could both appreciate
misterB: next time you come to LA I'll fill you up on dim sum
misterB: did you go on a weekend?
misterB: dim sum that is
JPennant: The last time we did Dim Sum? Yeah, we did.
misterB: ok. weekday dim sum is usually subpar
misterB: but just add it to the list of things that we can share whenever you visit
misterB: and have the time

misterB: sushi can be filling if presented right
misterB: usually with lots of beer! :-D
JPennant: heheh
JPennant: and a lighter wallet
JPennant: I know there are some prix fix sushi places in frisco.. I just cant think of any right now
JPennant: Of all the feelings I abhor, one is going to a restaurant and walking out feeling robbed.
JPennant: Thats why i wanna start cheep
misterB: you really get into the sublime when you're paying big bucks for sushi
misterB: you can get good stuff at a fair price if you look around
JPennant: I appreciate the sublime.. just not on a regular basis
JPennant: plus Ive learned sublime doesnt have to be expensive
JPennant: in fact, it often isnt
misterB: true
misterB: but this is a different kind of sublime

Still a mystery to me.

Apple Store, SF

Apple Store, SF, originally uploaded by Itinerant.

Market StreetIm feeling uninspired.

Since being back, Ive taken maybe 60 or 70 pix, which is my normal *daily* output. Im not even looking for things to photograph, with the feeling Ive taken them before. Its not that there is nothing to photograph in frisco, its just that Im not feeling it.
Its gotten to the point where it matters not if i bring the camera with me.

Of the various causes Iv been pondering...

Maybe Im homesick for the east coast. Or maybe Im just cold. Its no fun taking pics and having to fight an icy blast every day or night. Or waking up to a chilly room. Even when its sunny and warm out, there is a chill in the air. Does something to the brain. And soul.

Or maybe I just wanna take pictures in other places.
----------
When in New York I forgot to pick up a bootleg in Chinatown.

I finally pick up a bootleg of "Mr & Mrs Smith" from the young entrepreneur in the Tenderloin.

I make sure it works in a DVD player at work before I take it home.

I pop it into the Mac.

It spits it out.

Rinse, lather, repeat.

Arg.

I hate being patient.

Interestingly, Frisco has innumerable suhi joints, and I havent been to a one since Ive been here.

Uhura: soo very happy!
Uhura: which one did you get?
JPennant: a refurbed 20gb
Uhura: that's good
Uhura: plenty of space
JPennant: yeah. I couldve gotten the 60gb photo for 350, but I cant justify it
Uhura: what did this run you?
JPennant: I could barely justify spending 240
Uhura: well, they aren't cheap
Uhura: and refurb is a good way to go i hear--
Uhura: it's all fixed and warranteed
JPennant: its actually a new one. obsolete by the new 20gb color
JPennant: thats fine
JPennant: my ulterior motive was to get a portable storage drive to back up my pics when Im out shooting
Uhura: as long as you can justify it :-)
JPennant: barely :-)

Uhura: and that should be justification enough
JPennant: yeah

Finally, after several tries, Fuji has released a worthy replacement for my S602z. (They dont call it the legendary S602 for nuthin..)

mcclint: hahahahah
JPennant: But I will be getting it soon
mcclint: you arent scottish enough nor jewish enough to try squeezing a few extra bucks from an ipod then claim to go pay full price on a camera :-)
JPennant: I told you, I have scottish blood :-)
JPennant: This camera is that good, that I want one ASAP
JPennant: 9 megapixels, 300mm lens, ISO 1600 at full resolution
mcclint: golly
JPennant: theyre gonna sell a lot of these.
mcclint: so you're still spending a ton of money. why not just buy an SLR and extra lenses and save the expense of buying a whole other camera?
JPennant: I'll get one or two later.. but this fits my needs for now :-)
JPennant: Dont be fooled tho.. its a pro level camera
JPennant: its some serious shit
JPennant: I cant wait :-)

Hell, Ive been waiting since 2002. One can only be patient for so long.

On the replay

According
to my iTunes, these are my most played songs:

SF Pride '05Good Luck - Basement Jaxx w/ Lisa Kekaula

Yes, this is a very Gay Disco Club song. But damn man, who can resist Lisa Kekaula's honey-smoked scream of retribution?

Crush on you - Lil Kim/Lil Cease/Biggie Smalls

Its just for Mr Smalls growling refrain of "I know you heard me on the radio.."

New York - Rakim

The man describes New York to the tee. "In hi-tek dialect you aint catch yet."

Tell Me - Groove Theory

Vocals, backup, percussion, bass. Textbook smooth groove.

Feels Like Home - Basement Jaxx & M'shell Ndegeocello

Atmospheric trip hop with the classic M'shell feel. Worth the patient listen.

Big Punisher - Still Not A Player

"Watch The Pun get wicked ... Boriqua, Borena" Nueva Yorkian Puerto Rican groove from the late Big Pun.

Gorrilaz - Feel Good, Inc

That manic hook is sticky.

Liz Phair - Extraordinary

Power chords + Airy Love song + Mule-kick drums = Extraordinary.

Jurassic Park w/ The Pharcyde - Hard Times

They chat conscious lyrics over that Oakland 70's retro groove. Cant stop bopping your head.

So.. the iPod is on order.
